As far as I can tell, MercurySteam did its absolute best to chart its own course with handheld Castlevania, one that borrows from the greatness that came before it, but without copying it outright. But in going off the beaten path, the studio ended up diluting what has made Castlevania so great in the last 15 years. Its emphasis on fragmented exploration and shallow leveling is the exact opposite of what Castlevania fans like myself love, want and have come to expect.

Stranger yet is the fact that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow got what Castlevania was all about a lot more than many people gave it credit for. But that understanding hasn’t at all segued to the Nintendo 3DS version. I beat Mirror of Fate in just under nine hours with an 88% completion rating, and it wouldn’t take me more than an hour more to get it up to 100%. I simply don’t want to play anymore, which should tell you all you need to know. Because even the worst of the GBA/DS Castlevania games are more than worth seeing to statistical completion, but Mirror of Fate isn’t worth playing at all.","https://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/05/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-mirror-of-fate-review","2013-03-05","4.7",47
94195
8049,"Ewan Aiton
133,"https://cdn.criticdb.com/storage/v1/object/public/avatars/Outlets/GameWatcher-Logo.jpeg","GameWatcher","https://gamewatcher.com","Defeating the Ice Titan on the Lake of Oblivion is an engaging nod to Shadow of the Colossus and an exquisite portent of what to expect from Lords of Shadow.","https://www.gamewatcher.com/reviews/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-mirror-of-fate-hd-review/9488","2010-10-25","0",0
146016
12415,"Diego Arlek
150,"https://cdn.criticdb.com/storage/v1/object/public/avatars/Outlets/press-start-logo.jpg","Press Start","https://press-start.com.au/","The highlight of the combat is boss battles. Some of them are very difficult and require quick thinking to come up with strategies to approach them. Their actions have a pattern that can be figured out and exploited, but they aren’t simple and straightforward enough to make them unexciting. Some boss battles are extremely difficult, even after having figured out the patterns to their actions.
Even though the game offers you 3 characters to control through different parts of the story, they are unfortunately almost a rehash of each other in terms of gameplay. Their combos and blocking stances are practically identical, with each character only having variation with their special abilities, which doesn’t provide a big enough sense of difference.","https://press-start.com.au/reviews/2013/11/19/castlevania-lord-shadow-mirror-fate-review/","2025-05-07","
155542
11088,"Dustin Spencer
143,"https://cdn.criticdb.com/storage/v1/object/public/avatars/Outlets/capsule-computers-logo.jpg","Capsule Computers","https://www.capsulecomputers.com.au/","https://www.capsulecomputers.com.au/2013/03/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-mirror-of-fate-review/","2013-03-13","8.0",80,6,[20,25],[28],[]]
