Dubbed End of Eternity in Japan when it was released a few months ago, developer tri-Ace's newest creation is called Resonance of Fate here in the West and has finally arrived. Sadly the game is a bit of an unknown quantity around these parts. Perhaps it was SEGA's decision to publish it a scant week after the mega-giant that is Final Fantasy XIII. Perhaps people just are not that into the JRPG genre anymore, if they ever were. Whatever the reasons, if you've not heard of this or "decided to ...
There are probably few things more enjoyable in a video game experience than having free reign to do as you please. Sandbox games have always been a unique beast, taking longer to develop and being harder to get right. With so many elements and so many different ways the player can explore the world provided, it is easier to find faults, inaccuracies or glitches that the development team may have missed or not been able to rectify before setting their game upon the market. Prototype, being of...
Star Ocean: The Last Hope is the fourth installment in a series of RPGs by developer tri-Ace and publisher Square-Enix, though it actually serves as a prequel to the entire series' timeline. Truth be told this was my first experience with the series and with developer tri-Ace, having purchased but yet to play their other 360 title Infinite Undiscovery, and I dare say it was quite a good first impression.
Soulcalibur has always been my favorite fighting franchise. Sure, it doesn't have the gore that Mortal Kombat prides itself on, nor does it have the quick action of Street Fighter, but what it lacks in flash it more than makes up for in technique and execution. Former developer and current publisher of the franchise Namco (Bandai) has always taken care to uphold the story behind the game and connecting all the characters to the main plot. There's no Lizardman for the sake of having a lizardma...
Lost Odyssey is the newest Japanese-style RPG to hit the Xbox 360, the second from newly formed Mistwalker and their publishing giant Microsoft Game Studios. Mistwalker was formed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the mind behind the Final Fantasy franchise and a legend in general for RPG gamers. Hiro brought along his musical partner-in-crime Nobuo Uematsu to handle the scores for Mistwalker. Odyssey was developed in tandem with Feelplus, a studio created specifically for Mistwalker and comprised of ma...
Eternal Sonata, the newest offering from Namco-Bandai, previously separate companies as Namco and Bandai, is a beautiful cel-shaded, turn-based/free-action melded, Japanese-style RPG. If that was not enough hyphens for you, here's one more yet: this game is fan-freaking-tastic. Eternal Sonata is a highly stylized RPG mixing familiar elements with a brand new twist, creating an exhilaratingly fresh take on a very recycled genre.
I'm going to admit this up front: I am a Halo fanboy. I've loved just about everything about the games since they first launched. I spent many nights LANing with friends for the first one, and even more time spent on Live with the second one. I'll also admit the story never really interested me until I replayed Halo 2 for the PC recently, which was really only for the achievements. However, I'll also admit that I'm a realist. If there is something wrong with a game, I'll always be the first t...
