Being a 2D game, its graphics are quite simple but the simplicity does give way to massive environments that are fully explorable. These lands contain all sorts of surprises, even huge monsters that aren’t worth your time until you actually have some decent equipment. As such it’s recommended that you make a home for yourself. By doing so you’re able to create a bit of defense against creatures, and you can begin using your new home as a sort of Terraria HQ. Besides the added bonus of defense, your home also helps attract NPCs. These NPCs can offer goods that you’ll likely want to purchase, and with time you can eventually build a village of sorts. One of the main objectives of Terraria is to gain enough power from gathering, building and crafting so that you can ultimately defeat the boss situated closest to you. Once you’ve done this you gear up and continue on to the next one. Though simple this system works quite well and it keeps you trucking along while working on building up your character and your HQ.

Dynasty Warriors 3 was my first bout with the Warriors series. At the time I was quite young, probably close to 8 years old or so. I played the game for hours on end and loved every second of it. As I grew older, I found the games lack innovation and every new entry seemed to be more disappointing. Sure the basis of the game was fun, but it felt like Omega Force was basically copying and pasting content while adding in the occasional new map or character. With Samurai Warriors 4, Omega Force has finally made some great changes to take the Warriors franchise to the next level.

Straight out of the fires of hell, and into the fray against the angel of Death, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls wastes no time. Some people may say that their time was more than wasted during Diablo III’s launch given its disastrous release due to the unstable servers. The same can’t be said for Reaper of Souls. In fact, Reaper of Soul’s launched incredibly smoothly, with next to no hitches.  The shiny new additions include a new character class, a raised level cap (70), a new act, and a new gameplay mode. In reality, Blizzard had their work cut out for them to save their flagship dungeon crawler’s reputation. Though it sold incredibly well, Diablo III left fans of the franchise feeling disappointed. The requirement to constantly be online already upset some audiences, but when the login server’s burst into flames the night of Diablo III’s release it was game over. Though this is a mostly forgotten offense, more issues began to surface as time passed.

The original Sanctum caught many people off guard with its unique combination of mechanics. It took the strategy based aspects of tower defense games and fused it together with the excitement of first-person shooter action to create an unforgettable experience. Sanctum 2 retains what made the original fun to play and builds on it.

Sci-fi shooters have borrowed elements from the Alien movies for as long as I can remember. Gearbox’s Alien: Colonial Marines started off looking like it had potential.  Unfortunately, the final product leaves much to be desired.  The game feels empty, clunky and dated.  Initially, there was much promise in the meticulous recreation of the film’s sights and sounds.  Strobing lights and shadows creep along the functional future decks of the Sulaco while various audio queues whir and buzz around your character, reminding players of the game’s roots.  The inventory of pulse rifles, shotguns and steadicam-rigged smartguns shows the marine’s arsenal is intact.  The aliens, otherwise known as Xenomorphs, skulk and lurk in the shadows waiting to attack.  The game begins to show its weakness when you stop looking and start shooting at them, which is never good when the game is intended to be a shooter.

The Marker-corrupted creatures, many of whom we’ve seen before in the previous installments, bring numerous new tactics to the table this time around.  The Necromorphs and their appearance on the planet of Tau Volantis breathe new life into the game’s alien slaying combat.  Being that Tau Volantis is covered in snow, you must keep on the look out and listen carefully for hints for oncoming enemies.  The tiniest ripple in the snow will signal their presence before they suddenly emerge to attack you.  The visibility when exploring outside isn’t always clear, particularly so when heavy blizzards are pushing you around.  Frequently I found myself alone one moment struggling to find my way through the weather, and then suddenly surrounded by numerous Necromorphs.  It’s tense and exciting and makes the gameplay that much more.
