Neversong pulls inspiration from many great works to create an equally wholesome and terrifying examination of human guilt.
Neversong did nothing but impress as I made my way through its weird and wonderful world. There’s nothing quite like it, but if you’re a fan of games like Night in the Woods or Limbo, then Neversong fits into a similar category. It will send shivers down your spine one moment and have you cackling the next despite its macabre and serious tone. It’s obvious from its very first moments that love, ti...
Neversong is a great game, both for those who backed its initial concept and those looking for a fresh gaming experience. It's the kind of title that'll stay in the thoughts of those who play it long after the credits roll, and which shows the potential for indie games to do something fresh.
Neversong is a challenging cinematic platformer with beauty, whimsy, and elements of horror, that has a touching story to tell. While the game will be frustrating for some, it’s a challenge worth undertaking especially on the Nintendo Switch. While the game was out on PC before, the Switch is the perfect platform for both the game-type and design of the game.
Neversong is an amazing adventure through a world that feels uniquely crafted. It stands out in its genre because it takes platforming, thriller, and side-scrolling game elements, mashes them together, and what we get is a well-balanced narrative adventure game.
By adding a pinch of platforming and a dash of metroidvania, Neversong is a heartfelt and fun 2D action-adventure. You play as a boy, Peet, who wakes up from a coma. Quickly, you find out that Peet may have just woken from one nightmare only to find himself in another. All of the village’s grown-ups are missing, as is your childhood sweetheart, Wren.
Neversong is nearly the perfect game for the genre. Aside from the few issues that I mentioned, and few they are, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with side-scrolling puzzle game mechanics. The story is dark, beautiful, and haunting in a way that only a few games have been able to capture before. If you’re thinking of the next title to pick up and scratch that psychological narrati...
Most puzzles were unique enough, but none were truly puzzling. One puzzle, in particular, has Peet riding a skateboard and hitting certain checkpoints to unlock roadblocks. It was much too overused and sometimes failed to introduce enough variance to justify another use. Some puzzles can be solved immediately but have awkward setups or sequencing. The result is that those puzzles are more frustrat...
Verdict: There are many words that I can use to describe Neversong, and I believe memorable might be the most fitting one. With its gorgeous musical score, slick side-scrolling action, evocative and spooky writing, mystifying art style, and amusing puzzles, I can’t seem to wipe away the images the title has etched into my memory. For such a short game, I was quick to develop an interest in its des...
