Scott Pilgrim EX takes a different approach than the previous Scott Pilgrim beat-em-up, which works in some ways and feels a bit stiff in others. Despite the slightly wonky format, the aesthetic and gameplay are excellent, and there are lots of fun nods for fans of the source material to eat up in this tight title.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties does lose a few things in the process of remaking the underrated Yakuza 3, but the added content and more refined combat system make this a thoroughly enjoyable installment in the series. The story changes are a bit confusing, but being able to play as a villain is a fantastic inclusion that makes me curious about where Like a Dragon could be headed.
Mario Tennis Fever stands out as a delightful tennis game, even to someone as uninterested in sports games as myself. A bit too much of the story mode is a very slow tutorial, but the plethora of match types to try and the rock-solid core tennis gameplay make this a fantastic time all around.
My Hero Academia: All’s Justice has some ambitious ideas for an arena fighter, though they’re executed with mixed results. As a My Hero Academia 3D fighting game, All’s Justice is rather enjoyable and features an impressive roster – it’s just the singleplayer campaigns that struggle more, thanks to some peculiar design choices.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is certainly a bit different from what I expected, but it’s largely a strong next step for the series. Though some bizarre padding and an oddly empty open world keep the game from being a stone-cold classic, Metroid Prime 4 is still a great experience that manages to mostly live up to its long wait.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension is a great expansion to the base game that adds some much-needed quality-of-life improvements, interesting new Mega Pokémon, as well as plenty of returning Pokémon. The story is a bit strangely paced, but this is an overall worthwhile addition to an already solid title.
Kirby Air Riders is an extraordinary racing game that is filled to the brim with content and surprises. It’s deceptively simple to get the hang of and incredibly fun to dive deeper into as you play more and more, with the core gameplay loop even entrancing someone like me, who typically doesn’t get much out of racers. Basically, this is another brilliant Switch 2 title.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a tight musou game that combines the intriguing world and mechanics of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with the exciting and addictive combat of the Warriors franchise. The roster is a bit weak, and having to defend territory can mess with the pace a bit, but this is an overall solid Switch 2 hack-and-slash game.
Dispatch is a great adventure game that effectively uses and plays with superhero tropes to craft a memorable narrative, led by excellent performances. A couple of the choice-based outcomes are a bit confusing, but that isn’t enough to derail this strong title from hitting most of its targets.
