Bubsy 4D

Bubsy 4D

Given the franchise’s history, Busby 4D shocked me with how exceptional it is as a game. The movement feels delightfully smooth, the levels have the perfect amount of challenge, and the sardonic tone of dialogue is far more charming than in previous Bubsy games. Outside of a couple of camera issues, this is a mind-blowingly high-quality return for one of gaming’s less favored mascots.

Kiln has some cool ideas throughout, but the multiplayer-focused main gameplay loop and the lack of much beyond that fairly simple premise hold the game back. Crafting pots and messing around can be very enjoyable, but I don’t think that’ll be enough to sustain either your attention or the game for too long.

Directive 8020
Unscored

Directive 8020 does some things very well and others with less grace, delivering a thought-provoking interactive story game that struggles with pacing. Though the characters are worth following, the atmosphere can be pleasantly creepy, and it’s easy to rewind to try new routes, the plethora of bloated stealth sections makes replaying the game a bit less appealing.

Mixtape is a lovingly crafted homage to the ‘90s that hits far more than it misses. The earnestness of the story and cast, combined with the novel implementation of goofy little mini games, makes for a very unique title that’ll probably surprise you in more ways than one.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is a relaxing and moving adventure game that people of all ages and all levels of Moomin fandom can equally enjoy. The abundance of fetch quests can wear a little thin, but the presentation and enjoyable exploration throughout the title make it a worthwhile experience.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is one of the weirdest and most absolutely endearing games I have ever played. One part social simulator and one part endorphin-blasting island builder, it feels like there’s a nigh endless amount of laughs to craft and satisfying stuff to do. I just wish it were easier to share your creations and island with friends, as that’s been made bizarrely difficult.

Town of Zoz has a lot of great ideas and incredible presentation, but the overall stilted flow of combat stymies what could be a top-notch indie gem. Regardless, the positives are numerous here and worth experiencing, so long as you’re open to a somewhat challenging combat system.

KuloNiku: Bowl Up!
Unscored

KuloNiku: Bowl Up! is a fast-paced, cozy cooking game that blends a sharp anime aesthetic with pleasant writing to create a rather unique title. I ran into a little stuttering here and there, but the game itself is probably the most fun you could have cooking bizarre noodle combinations for quirky customers.

Super Meat Boy 3D
Unscored

Super Meat Boy 3D is an overall tight adaptation of the iconic Team Meat platformer into the squishier third dimension. The visual style loses some of its unique Flash edge in the transition to 3D, but the stages themselves retain the teeth-clenching challenge and goofy humor that made Super Meat Boy so beloved.
