Toby: The Secret Mine can be easily pardoned as a complete larceny of Limbo – but it’s not as simple as that. When Toby does craft its own uniqueness, there is a lot to like. While it doesn’t do this as frequent as it probably should, it never overshadows what the game has to offer. I played Limbo to death when it was released on PSN – pun intended – and while it’s not as repayable as limbo, I’ll probably give Toby another run through too. After all, nobody runs away with my monochrome-styled friends and puts them in cages and gets away with it.
Valley is simply a missed opportunity at creating something with a decent narrative, good movement mechanic because it relies so much on the DNA of earlier games. You can literally point to each strand and go “hey, look, this bit is like (insert recent indie game i.e. Journey, Firewatch etc.). The game would have benefitted from a more original script, a lusher and more dynamic presentation and world just to say the least.
When the team previewed Headlander at EGX Rezzed they were justified in their excitement. Double Fine and Adult Swim have produced an immensely assured game that is highly recommended to any gamer. It’s a simple game in its approach: its mechanics are not over-wrought or complicated, but it’s top quality fun. Headlander is of the few games in recent memories to garner a true belly laugh. Now where did I leave those flares and dancing shoes? I’ve got a space disco to attend.
