As so many of us continue to learn, nostalgia trips can turn eye-roll-inducing in a hurry. They run the risk of turning into a hackneyed compilation of things we know while sacrificing the overall quality of the end product. A cynical cash-in, as it were. WWE 2K24, it must be said, does not succumb to this particular pitfall.
Here's the thing about video games and microtransactions: they're probably going to be intertwined forever. That will always be a major issue. Not from a personal 'I have a problem with spending' standpoint, I should say. More from a general 'This doesn't feel right at all' one, though. The biggest problem is that they're central to everything you can attempt to achieve.
There is a moment early on in Gotham Knights when it becomes unequivocally clear that this is not going to be an Arkham game. The moment itself isn't necessarily important from the outset, but what the moment represents most certainly is. Players are immediately made aware that they are no longer burdened with being Batman; that they no longer have to live up to his legacy. For some, the Ultimate Team grind has become a way of life. For others, that same game mode has taken over to the point where other modes may simply feel tacked on; only there because they need to be there, only there because they make up part of being a FIFA game. And yet, there is joy to be had outside of Ultimate Team if players wish to find it.
So for that, the level of detail that goes into MyCareer is beyond commendable. From the seemingly endless offerings of clothing and accessories to bright, loud colors as far as the eye can see and a city that truly expands with ease, there is a lot to look forward to. Want to skateboard around the city while ticking off quest boxes? Have it at! Just know that you're in for a little adjustment control-wise. Want to wear whatever the heck you dang while please while winning over the hearts of millions? Go for it! Just understand that it costs as much or more Virtual Currency (VC) to upgrade your player off the court as it does on it. Even with a 100,000 VC head start, it was pure agony.
