Gearbox Software’s smash hit trilogy Borderlands was deliciously more than the sum of its cartoonish, firearms-obsessed parts. Much the same is true of Battleborn, proving beyond reasonable doubt the old adage, ‘It’s not where you take it from, it’s where you take it to.’ Just so long as that place has loads of guns.
It’s not easy keeping track of Tom Clancy’s gritty techno-war games. Rainbow Six: Siege is the 10th main game in the franchise best summarised as ‘the hardcore tactical one where you spend as much time in menus as you do shooting people’.
Some people think that Japanese RPGs start and end with Final Fantasy. Others can recite their top five Dragon Quest combat systems from memory. For every series that goes supernova on a global scale, there are plenty more that deserve the same nerdish devotion from Westerners – starting with the Tales Of… franchise.
