EA Sports FC 25 continues to hand in the same homework it's done for the past few years now, albeit with a new paragraph on Rush. It's a solid game that will likely enjoy plenty of additions throughout the year, but I'd like to see more ambition in the future.
Tekken 8 improves on its predecessor with a complete graphics overhaul, drastically improved netcode, and a robust base game package featuring 32 characters and 16 stages. With DLC fighters already in the pipeline, there’s more than enough content to keep fighting game fans packing punches for the foreseeable future.
Valve has improved the Counter-Strike formula with the release of CS2, even if there's still a lot of work to be done before it's feature complete. While we're in the dark on specific timelines, the developer's work rate has been promising since launch, and if it continues at this pace, we’re in for an exciting 2024 as Valve ushers in a new era of Counter-Strike.
This is the first Street Fighter game in a long time where it feels like players of all skill levels are welcome. While World Tour mode is disappointing, the sheer scope of SF6 means you don’t need to wait for the inevitable Ultra Edition before jumping in.
The elements are there to create something truly special, but right now Metal: Hellsinger feels more like a Doom Eternal mod than it does a standalone title.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 may not be the first game to feature loot boxes, but it has essentially become synonymous with the term. If you really aren’t aware of the controversy surrounding Battlefront 2, I’ll break it down for you: EA chose to capitalize on the loot box system most gamers are used to by tying them into the gameplay. A lot of developers these days only stick to cosmetics when it comes to loot box rewards, but EA decided to make these rewards gameplay related. As a result, the Star Cards (Battlefront 2’s power-ups) you obtain from loot boxes make your characters much more powerful. The more loot boxes you open, the better you become, leading many people to brand the game ‘pay to win’. Right before the game officially launched, EA temporarily removed all microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2 and claimed they would address the issues with the game’s progression system.
It must be difficult for a new developer to make a name for themselves without having their game be directly compared to other titles in the same genre. This is precisely what Polish developers, REIKON GAMES, have been going through with RUINER. Just looking at RUINER from a basic level, it’s a top-down action shooter with a unique visual style, it features an incredible amount of violence and is being published by Devolver Digital… okay, maybe I understand where some of the comparisons are coming from.
Ubisoft have two game series that will always stick out to me for their debut games: Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed. The reason for this is simple: both games had interesting concepts but they weren’t fully realised until the sequel. For Honor is similar in this regard as there are clear things that can be improved with a sequel, however I still believe it is well worth playing. The combat in the game is fantastic, and though the learning curve may be steep, once you get the hang of it y...
As someone who started playing Planet Coaster without any real expectations, I can safely say that the game is well worth your time if you are the least bit interested in a game reminiscent of the classic Rollercoaster Tycoon games. Frontier have created one of the best games in the genre, and judging by their support of Elite Dangerous post-launch, it seems that there’s still more to come from the developers.
Battleborn ended up stretching itself too thin by trying to include too many modes. If Gearbox had focused on the competitive aspect of the game only, I’m sure Battleborn would’ve ended up being much better. The campaign adds nothing of value to the game but the multiplayer modes are worth playing if you can get a team together. It’s a shame solo players have been completely ignored by Gearbox, otherwise Battleborn may have been worth recommending to people.
