Physics-based 2D time trials are a great way to test your gaming skills. This new addition to the genre may not improve upon the familiar formula much, so let's see how it lives up to modern classics such as Trials.
Action Henk does not waste any time throwing you into its fun, fast-paced, speed running type gameplay. The game reminds me of the older Sonic the Hedgehog era where speed is the main factor and the ability to avoid obstacles is extremely important. You play as an old action figure who is past his prime named “Action Henk” who is bent on stopping the evil plans of another action figure. This creative concept allows for some unique and interesting level design. The first few races will take place in a teenager’s bedroom, slowly branching out into other areas like tropical islands and theme parks.
A fun, familiar experience, Action Henk is a lovely little one-more-go arcade racer that’ll have you attempting levels over and over to shave a few milliseconds off your time. You’ve done it all before, but that won’t stop it putting a smile on your face.
Whilst Action Henk certainly won’t float everyone’s boat with its iffy visuals and reliance on score chasing to provide any long-lasting attraction, it is still an interesting and addictive combination of racing and platforming. The easy to pick up but hard to master gameplay means it provides fun for all skill ranges, and the local multiplayer mode makes it great for parties where it’s sure to raise more than a few laughs. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t feature the level editor or online multiplayer features of the PC release, as they would have been sure to make Action Henk a more rounded and appealing package. Still, for score chasers, Action Henk will provide an enjoyable and lasting challenge that is quite unlike anything else currently available on the Xbox One, making it a title that you should certainly consider checking out.
Action Henk is enjoyable and challenging, of that there is no doubt. It isn't going to win any awards for visuals – despite looking good enough to get the job done – and we'd like to have seen the comedy brand placement from the initial playroom area be used more in the levels themselves. With that said, neither of these things is going to interrupt your entertainment and the enjoyment and exquisite frustration that the game provides is more than enough for it to get our recommendation. Good stuff.
