Attack of the Earthlings Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Attack of the Earthlings is another turn-based, X-COM-esque game which turns the old trope of aliens invading humans on its head, making the humans invade the aliens for a change. Now, there aren’t many games that I can say I’ve finished it one sitting, but Attack of the Earthlings is short enough to be one of them.
Predators vs. the Alien
The turn-based strategy sub-genre has seen a big resurgence over the past six years. From classic titles like Jagged Alliance, Advance Wars and, of course, X-COM. There's a lot of history to look towards. The genre just seemed to go quiet and drop into a lull. This was ended, with the genre invigorated thanks to releases like XCOM, XCOM 2 and Shadow Tactics. Attack of the Earthlings looks to add to the genre, but with a twist.
Simply put, you can quite literally get away with murder. While Attack of the Earthlings is aiming to be more casual than its counterparts, its gameplay really is too simple to be interesting for more than a few minutes. This, mixed with the criminally awkward and slow animations, makes the game little more than a chore, broken up a few some decent jokes. Attack of the Earthlings has the ingredients to be a unique entry in the turn-based strategy genre – but it’s missing vital elements that would’ve made the gameplay tolerable.
Chris McAuley reviews one of the latest Turn Based Strategies for the PC. Attack of the Earthlings puts you in the slimy shoes of an alien queen attempting to protect her planet from greedy humans. Is this an XCOM wannabe or in a league of it's own?
