Professional reviews from gaming critics
Combining crazy physics and an even crazier story scenario, Coffin Dodgers has managed to do just enough to stand out from the crowd, offering a decent little kart-racer that should generate a laugh or two. A slight lack of content and a less-than-perfect overall quality prevent it from being something worth shouting about, however, so you might want to consider your options before jumping in with an immediate purchase.
With a name like Coffin Dodgers one would expect the type of laughs the game will invoke but if you’re like me and enjoy that tongue-in-cheek humour then that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s the gameplay and graphics which bog down the overall experience. Whether we like it or not, amazing kart racers like Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing have set the bar for this type of genre which means in order to bring the heat you need to find ways to innovate or do something new. It’s hard to recommend Coffin Dodgers to anybody but the most ardent karting game fan who’s desperate for a new title. The poor graphical presentation coupled with the lack of content and replay value means that it isn’t worth the £10 asking price, but if you catch it on sale then you’ll probably get a couple hours of light entertainment out of it. For everyone else, it’s best to leave this one to the Grim Reaper whilst we wait patiently for a better karting game to come along.
Coffin Dodgers is a classic example of a good idea backed up by poor execution. The gameplay feels dated before it starts as it doesn't progress things from the karting pretenders that have come before, and the visuals sort of fittingly feel like they're from an older generation. The premise has lashings of potential and there's a chuckle or two to be found, but the game is far too easy and brief for single players. Multiplayer is limited to offline play only and is as enjoyable as in every other non-Mario and non-Crash Bandicoot-based kart game, which is to say that it won't be one that you'l...
