I’ve said a lot about Doki Doki Literature Club already, but there’s a lot more for you to find for yourself. The story goes to some very surprising places once you’re allowed a peek behind the curtain, and the game itself makes excellent use of its platform in ways I absolutely adored — ways which I won’t spoil here as they deserve to be experienced (and played with) firsthand. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is both a celebration of visual novels and a deep dive into the potential of interactive fiction. This updated version introduces new content that continues to weaponize the game’s mastery over the visual novel format to land even more emotional gut punches.
Doki Doki Literature Club is a mind boggling and hard hitting horror game that takes tried and tested formulas of both visual novels and dating sims and turns them on their heads. The themes and story pack a punch, and stayed with me long after I had finished playing. It may require commitment from some to get through but the reward for those who stick it is more than worth it
Setup-wise the game takes place in a virtual machine, and you are essentially logging into it to play the game. There is a file system in the main menu and everything. The game isn’t super long, but the multiple playthroughs are worth it here. You will desperately want to see everything the game has to offer after your first time through, trust me.
All in all it's been a very wishy-washy review, but that's because it's a really fine line trying to explain why Doki Doki Literature Club is so interesting. It's not necessarily the best story, but it does things we've not seen done before, and in this day and age that is definitely something to be praised. It's a hard sell getting people to play what looks to be a traditional anime dating simulator, but those who do give it the time of day won't regret it... or will they?
