Fort Solis

Fort Solis' incredible story is told through the brilliant performances by its star-studded cast. As is the purpose of walking sims, if you go into Fort Solis not expecting much in terms of gameplay, it makes for a brilliant one-sitting game.

It’s short enough to play through in one sitting, but that’s for the best: once you get started with Fort Solis, you’re going to struggle to pull yourself away. It’s a tense, haunting journey that will have you hooked from the word go, keeping you on your toes as you wonder what awaits around every corner. Perhaps its overall story could have packed a bit more punch, but we still lapped up every second of it as we explored the fascinating and eerie titular space station.

Though light on engaging gameplay mechanics (and gameplay in general), Fort Solis is an accomplished narrative experience. Boasting a compelling story, an atmospheric setting, and excellent acting performances, it's an accomplished first outing for indie studio Fallen Leaf.

Fort Solis' strengths are quite apparent from the get-go. It's a short, interactive thriller with a great cast, jaw-dropping visuals, and some frantic moments tucked in between. It has a great premise, and the slow exploration-based gameplay has its appeal. However, shallow writing and inconsequential QTEs make it an unfulfilling thriller experience.

The notion of what defines a game is constantly in flux. A decade or two ago, games as narrative vehicles were very much in their infancy. The first effort from new studio Fallen Leaf, Fort Solis tells the story of Jack Leary and Jessica Appleton: two engineers working a Martian colony 50 years in the future.

With a slow burn opening that lays the groundwork for a potentially brilliant sci-fi thriller, Fort Solis initially shows plenty of promise - but its story loses momentum in its later chapters, and fails to stick the landing.
