Hamsterdam is a delightful homage to Golden Era kung-fu movies, but if the martial artists were all small mammals. It might get repetitive quite quickly, but if you’re looking for something you can play in short sprints or something fun for your kids, Hamsterdam is a genuine treat.

If all this rodent-filled fighting sounds wacky to you, you'd be right - Hamsterdam is a delightfully wacky beat-em-up in all the right ways. To quote head animator Derek Chow, Hamsterdam is "inspired by eighties kung-fu movies, the perspectives of The Wire, Amsterdam in the famed Pulp Fiction scene, and... Ratatouille.", which about describes the game perfectly. If you ever had the oddly specific goal of visiting the red light district as a hamster on a scooter, well, this is your chance.

Hamsterdam is a tale of a resistance led by an unlikely hero, in a game where classic brawler mechanics meet rhythm and precision.

Hamsterdam has its charms and definitely some potential. The character designs are fun and Pimm’s stylish hamster-fu feels satisfying to use, but there’s just not enough variety to hold a player’s attention for more than maybe an hour. Dressing Pimm up in goofy hats or a Bruce Lee tracksuit adds a little spice, but the repetitive gameplay will likely catch up to you all the same. Hamsterdam is a mobile title through-and-through. It's got all of the tropes normally associated with mobile games, such as limited gameplay mechanics and a heavy focus on purchasing cosmetic items, with none of the depth you should come to expect from your average Switch title. There's a lot of potential in the game's premise and presentation that could well be capitalised on for any future games, but here it feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity. Add to this the lengthy load times and technical issues, and this is game you'd be best off avoiding.
