Hardcore Mecha is a superb 2D side-scrolling adventure that marries some spectacularly OTT anime storytelling with explosively satisfying robot combat. There's a surprisingly meaty story here set across eighteen wonderfully varied levels with plenty of depth to RPG elements allowing you to customise your mech's attack and defence capabilities. An unlockable survival mode, online PvP, local multiplayer and mission rankings also add plenty of replayability to proceedings. It's a shame that this Switch port has some framerate issues that can see intense battles stutter, however, if RocketPunch ca...
When, eight or so hours later, I finally defeated the mastermind behind Hardcore Mecha‘s Mars invasion, I was so pumped that I wanted to dive right back in, ready for an ever greater challenge. There’s a wave-based mode that lets you play as any mech in the game, which is fun, and a PVP online mode – but there’s no ‘hard’ difficulty level, just ‘easy’ and ‘normal’. Normal mode is appropriately taxing, and there’s the prospect of picking up weapons components I missed last time, but I still found myself craving escalation.
There's no denying that Hardcore Mecha is mostly for people who already love over the top anime with silly writing and explosive action, but even if you aren't there's still plenty to like. Whilst the controls are a bit of a fumbling mess and a few things could've been fleshed out more, we still had a ton of fun in the campaign and Simulation mode. Whether you love or hate the stereotypes, Hardcore Mecha is great if you're a fan of blowing up tons of robots in style.

Get ready for some mech-on-mech action with Hardcore Mecha. Hardcore Mecha is a stylish side-scroller with beautiful, 2D visuals, a diverse cast of characters, and much more, all jam-packed into this explosive game. The story and presentation often feel like they’ve been ripped from an anime movie – and I mean that in the best possible way. The gameplay blends piloting large mechs with smaller scale on-foot moments. Hardcore Mecha brings a lot to the table and delivers it all style if not grace.
