Professional reviews from gaming critics

River City Girls’ energetic storyline may falter near the end but this beat’em up is a prime example of what the genre is capable of as it delivers some great combat set in a fantastic world that thrives in its uniqueness. These girls are ready to kick butt in the name of love and those that take that journey with them are in for an amazing game.

River City Ransom is one of the most famous beat ’em up franchises of all time, being a precursor to the genre alongside its close brother, Double Dragon. It has always had a much bigger following in Japan, where it is known as Kunio-Kun, but that doesn’t mean the series is unknown around here. The last time I played a River City Ransom game was in 2017, with the release of the somewhat underwhelm...

Kunio-kun, the super-silly classic beat 'em up series, has had more than a few fun games brought to the west in recent years and here's a brand new spin-off developed by WayForward of Shantae fame. Could the best Kunio game not even star Kunio?

River City Girls gives the beat-em-up genre a new lease on life with its solid combat, stellar spritework, and sprawling world. Those that can stomach some backtracking will find an adventure worthy of biffing a few baddies over.

With River City Girls, WayForward has done stellar work with the Kunio-kun series, having created a love letter to the franchise as inviting to newcomers as it is to series veterans. On the flip side, a commitment to brawler gameplay is definitely required, as RCG only truly finds its sweet spot once players can unleash the potential of our psycho schoolgirls’ bone-breaking abilities. A co-op budd...

With all of that said, I think a lot of your personal enjoyment with River City Girls comes down to how you feel about beat 'em ups. This is a good one of those, but if it's not your genre, I'm not sure if it's worth recommending. On the other hand, Kunio-Kun diehards will probably love this game. It's an excellent matchup of beautiful aesthetics, great music, and satisfying combat. So go find the...

Misako and Kyoko star in a co-op beat-'em-up for the ages! Enter River City Girls, the latest from WayForward and Arc System Works, oozing with vibrant pixel art, dastardly baddies, and lots of meta humor! Fight to take back the legendary Kunio-kun and his pal Riki, who have been kidnapped by an unknown force. Do you have what it takes?

Have you seen Kunio and Riki? Because there's these two crazy broads saying they are their boyfriends or something? Whoever took them is gonna pay -- these girls are pissed.

During the glory days of arcades, the brawler genre was king. Practically every virtual street was packed with goons and bosses waiting for beatdowns, and players were all too happy to oblige. The River City series was an innovator of this era, incorporating elements of RPG-style progression and open-world exploration. Though River City Girls still has those things, it lacks the same experimental ...

I wanted to love River City Girls. A modern side scrolling beat 'em up, from a proven developer like WayForward, with bright, bold visuals, and two kick-ass heroines should have been great. Instead, thanks to way too much repetitive grinding, River City Girls is a bit boring. Something I never thought I'd say about a game that has high school children hitting zombie cheerleaders with wrenches.
