ROBOBEAT manages to convincingly blend the rhythm game genre with roguelike shooters to create a mix that I hadn’t ever considered before. It banks on the spectacle of synchronised action and does so with explosive results. While I don’t necessarily think the aesthetic manages to stand the test of repeated playthroughs, what is here is commendable and certainly well-conceived.
While it takes some getting used to, it’s possible to have a lot of fun with ROBOBEAT, especially when you add your own music.
Is ROBOBEAT the first rhythm-based first-person shooter available for the Nintendo Switch? It's certainly the first one I've played, and that maybe explains my confusion. The game's certainly unique, but is it necessary? Let's figure that out.Read More
Robobeat is a rhythm-based first-person shooter that, like a couple of recent titles such as Metal: Hellsinger, combines fast-paced combat with a beat-matched shooting mechanic. You play as Ace, a bounty hunter who has been called on to find a cyborg named Frazzer, but that might not be the whole story.
Robobeat has a great soundtrack and its combat ticks all the boxes, but uneven balance and boring level design puts this one out of step with its peers.
