SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered brings another excellent cult classic to modern audiences. While not a standard RPG, it does some bold things with intertwined storytelling, and beautiful, updated watercolour visuals draw out the best of this title.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is a solid port of a great JRPG from more than two decades ago. It keeps what was special about the original — the story and the characters — and adds to it with new plot elements. While we weren’t in love with the combat mechanics or the exploration puzzles, they don’t get in the way of a great story. Just like we don’t love everything about our family, we could overlook the game’s shortcomings to focus on what made it memorable.

SaGa Frontier 2 tells an ambitious, generational story that involves two major familial lines over the years and the way a mysterious object intertwines these stories. Originally a little bit of a messier experience, SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered smoothes out some of the rougher edges and adds some greatly appreciated quality of life aspects while also slapping a nice coat of paint on its beautiful watercolor art.

It’s a great time to be into SaGa. Kawazu’s team has been able to build on the success of some risky remasters, all the way to making a brand-new game and a full remake that has helped solidify SaGa as one of Square Enix’s secret weapons. As such, SaGa Frontier 2: Remastered was seen as the perfect time to try a “shadow drop,” and see how the RPG community reacts. I hope it does well, because not only is a new SaGa always a good time, but this remaster is a beautiful example of how an older game can be preserved and refined at the same time.

SaGa Frontier 2 was ahead of its time. Though not everyone will feel the love with this remaster considering its notorious difficulty, SaGa Frontier 2 maintains a special place in the genre for its unique combat, storytelling, and incredible art style. It's just a shame it can be such a brutally difficult game.
