Shotgun Cop Man is not something I expected to enjoy as much as I did, yet nearly 150 levels proved me wrong. The moment-to-moment gameplay is so well done, and having to plan my moves while dodging and fighting demons is a blast.

Take the 2D stylings of Super Meat Boy, remove the jump button, and throw in more guns than you can shake a stick at. That’s the basic recipe for Shotgun Cop Man, the new game from DeadToast Entertainment (the makers of My Friend Pedro). It’s a minimalistic precision platformer where your movement is controlled almost entirely by blasting your big shotgun. It’s fast, movement-based mayhem, and a whole lot of fun.

Like other precision platformers before it, Shotgun Cop Man takes a deliberate gameplay-first approach and trades even a fun story for a few gags and quips. Its unique approach to movement is enough of a hook to push you through the game’s many, many levels, however, I do think the game will live and die, and perhaps avoid premature damnation, on its custom levels.

Sometimes a video game is an epic. It’s daunting, and it’s forever, and it’s a slate of marble you slowly chip away at for weeks and months and an entire year. Other times, a video game is lightning and fireworks. It’s an instant flash, and immediate dopamine, and a bag of chips that’s empty before you know it but also maybe empty before you have too much of it. It’s Shotgun Cop Man.

I enjoyed my time with Shotgun Cop Man but, where I couldn’t stop replaying My Friend Pedro, I don’t see myself returning to this one. Shotgun Cop Man is frantic, fun, and funny. It is also repetitive, irritating, and doesn’t separate itself from the pack. What it does have is enough charm and sharp gameplay to make itself a worthy pickup.
