The inclusion of asynchronous multiplayer is going to be a boon to those who can’t commit to multi-hour play sessions but can tip away at a game over time. Aesthetically, Solium Infernum is stunning and boasts a distinctive style, one that is aided by a soundtrack that matches tonally with the game’s themes. League of Geeks has crafted a masterful political strategy game, one that I foresee damaging a lot of friendships.

There are a few lingering bugs here, but for the most part, Solium Infernum is a devilishly tricky backstab simulator that's rich with strategic possibility. Its handful of solo scenarios are meaty and challenging, but the long tail here is definitely in its multiplayer.

Solium Infernum is an ambitious project that excellently delivers on the Machiavellian politics of hell. Hell’s throne is empty and ripe for the taking. Play in real time or asynchronously in games of up to 6. The path to victory is strewn with blood so be careful you don’t lose you friends along the way.

While there are definitely plenty of fun and interesting parts to Solium Infernum; from choosing the right Archfiend and loadout, to poring over the lore and potential strategy you can take with the Encyclopaedia Infernum and its 5 Power trees, the pain points made me sigh in frustration more than look forward to my next session. While I really like the concept of a 4X game that puts Diplomacy first (even trying to kill off all your opponents takes much more effort than just deciding to go to war) and has such a unique theming and aesthetic, the actual gameplay needs to back that up. Solium Infernum regards strategy as a game of intellect, patience, and observation. Put into those terms, it might sound dry, but its visual flair combined with the ingenious ways it turns abstract ideas into tangible, comprehensible, and thrilling game mechanics make it irresistibly playable.

This is League of Geeks’ first release since laying off nearly half of their staff and putting their previous game Jumplight Odyssey on indefinite pause.
