Vikings: Wolves of Midgard

Vikings – Wolves of Midgard is at it’s best when it engages you in mindless bloody carnage.That’s not to say the game is easy or simple. When I hit “start” on this third-person action rpg from developer Games Farm, I was expecting a Diablo-adjace experience full of hacking and slashing, maybe a spattering of samey classes and perhaps a serviceable upgradeable skill tree. It’s been a long time since a game of this genre has impressed me, so maybe my expectations were a bit skewed.

Shortcomings aside, hack and slash fiends who are looking for their next fix should definitely check out Vikings: Wolves of Midgard, a genre effort which more than earns its passage into Valhalla.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is a recommendable dungeon crawler, with fun and interesting enemies, a wide but not overwhelming array of player abilities, and an engaging combat system that demands that players remain on their toes and think carefully about what abilities to use and when. However, a few technical issues, and a repetitive structure prevent the game from being something for players to return to after they’ve completed the main story.

Length is not an issue when it comes to Vikings - Wolves Of Midgard, especially as you’re offered a New Game+ mode that strips you of your gear but allows you to keep your skills once the campaign is completed. By that point, however, I found few reasons to go through the entire thing again. Tedious combat is something you don’t want in an aRPG and there’s plenty of it here. With its lackluster skill trees, it’s difficult for Vikings - Wolves Of Midgard to cement itself in the current landscape, as there are far better alternatives. Before someone points it out, yes, mundane enemies and boxes / destructible items drop stuff too, sometimes even weapons or armor but not in the quantity we’ve come to expect from today’s ARPGs. What we’re left with in Vikings is the endless grind for materials to build the town to get better loot. Sounds good but the implementation falls flat.

A game that has plenty of polish but is average underneath.

As unmemorable as it was disappointing, Vikings—Wolves of Midgard misses the mark. With a flat story, uninteresting combat made worse by the game’s annoying exposure system, and a boring environment to boot, this title doesn’t compare to its many well-liked peers within the ARPG genre.

Turning on Vikings: Wolves of Midgard for the first time, I’ll be transparent in saying I was expecting basically a re-badged Diablo. Overall, I believe this game can be fun and challenging because of the weapon variety, the skills and the ability to dodge enemies. I also believe this can be especially fun if you play with other people since it has a multiplayer feature. The story is a little interesting but I really don’t get the unnecessary choice statements in dialogues as they seem to funnel to the same conversation. Add to the fact that your viking is basically someone who is rude and only cares about killing enemies.
