Reigns Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Small in scope, this card game is well polished. Simple mechanics and complex choices combine to make an intriguing, amusing and very enjoyable game in Nerial’s Reigns.
For a game that’s so simple, Reigns is very easy to get absorbed in. Your kingdom evolves in a much more subtle way than your traditional management sim, but also in a more meaningful way. While there’s a lack of variety in cards that tend to crop up, there’s also enough depth and variety in general to keep you going for quite some time.
With its low-poly art-style and swipe-based gameplay, the card-game seems deceivingly simple. However, the unforgiving yet highly entertaining gameplay will keep you coming back for more. Even though the game has only just launched, we can't wait to see what developer Nerial (hopefully) has in store for us in the future. We wholeheartedly hope for more cards to unlock, more characters to meet, and more inevitable deaths to willingly suffer. Long live the king (maybe)!
I’m not entirely sure what I expected when I began Reigns, but I am certain that it wasn’t a humorous yet dark trek into my own psyche. In the end, I came out on the side of lightness though: I can now enjoy ruling my people at a leisurely pace. The game functions like Tinder, but you certainly don’t have to use the same reaction time as you would in a case like that. Taking your time to learn and appreciate the nuances in Reigns make it worth returning to time and time again.
After The Witcher 3's 10th anniversary last year, it's now Reigns' turn, the famous card game franchise where you swipe like on Tinder, to celebrate its tenth birthday. A double anniversary full of meaning, since today sees the release of the crossover between the two franchises: Reigns The Witcher. This is an adaptation of Nerial's formula to the Witcher universe.
Reigns is a great game, however, it's only so in short bursts. Funny and whimsical writing makes for enjoyable and befuddling scenarios I was fond of that got a chuckle out of me.
While there isn’t much to do after your first playthrough, Reigns is a short and sweet micromanagement adventure game filled with quirky characters and amusing conversations.
