Before I Forget Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Before I Forget is a highly emotive tale about one woman’s struggle with dementia, and a story that everyone should experience.
Before I Forget examines an extraordinary life, told through the mundane and profound details scattered throughout a home. Players get the chance to understand the debilitating effects of neurocognitive disease through a story about love, loss, and living on.
Before I Forget is a strong, concise story tracing a woman suffering from dementia as she slowly uncovers pieces of herself as well as the story framed within this mental health journey. It doesn't waste players' time with a run-time that doesn't overstay its welcome, helped by a protagonist that doesn't divulge too much information when she speaks.
With it only requiring a minor investment in terms of time and expense (it's currently £6.69 on consoles), I would wholeheartedly recommend that you check out Before I Forget. The game's story is able to effectively convey the struggles of living with dementia in many intelligent ways and it doesn't overstay its welcome being just one-hour long. That said, if you're not a fan of 'walking simulator' titles like Gone Home or What Remains of Edith Finch, then I don't think this does anything too drastically different that's going to win you over.
A sensitive, beautiful and emotional glimpse into what it might be like to live with Alzheimer’s Disease, Before I Forget feels as important as it is excellently-executed. It’s not exactly a ‘game’ in the traditional sense, but it’s an experience that will stick with you and perhaps make you look at the world in a new light. You’ll certainly never take your most treasured memories for granted again, that’s for sure.
