I booted up Portal Knights with very little expectation. I had seen some screenshots that looked neat, and a bit of the trailer that promised some interesting combat, so I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. It was clear that there was definitely something worth checking out here. Unfortunately, it’s with a heavy heart that I must report: Portal Knights isn’t that great.

For Honor

For Honor

At around the 5 hour mark something finally clicked and I stopped treating For Honor like a glorified Dynasty Warriors game. Throwing out flurries of heavy attacks and easily telegraphed rolls wasn’t working and, until then, I couldn’t easily grasp why. Nothing in my gaming vocabulary could make sense of what exactly For Honor wanted from me. It wasn’t until I slowed down, took a deep breath, and lengthened my patience, that I came to realize that For Honor was quietly offering the deepest and most satisfying third person combat ever devised. That’s on me. I hadn’t been following the game up until now but I’m glad that I’ve come around because For Honor is special and worth some attention.

Some of these ants are jerks and need to be locked up though. They’ve been convicted of murder, break and enters, theft, and all manner of other violent crimes, so you’ll need to build cells and other special facilities in order keep your staff and the other prisoners safe. You’re presented with a very dysfunctional ant farm that needs to be controlled and managed to a point where everyone is happy. This can actually feel fairly impossible at times since there are so many things going on under the surface. It’s a lot to take in at first.
