Professional reviews from gaming critics

Portal Knights by Keen Games is a truly unique adventure game that combines elements from Minecraft, Terraria, and The Legend of Zelda while adding its own creative twist to the genre.

Portal Knights on the Switch is a really enjoyable game outside of a few minor nitpicks. It can be a tad frustrating to have to constantly mine materials for new gear in the very early going. But much like Minecraft, a lot of the game is mining and exploring. If you take your time and enjoy every aspect of the game, you'll likely enjoy Portal Knights a lot more than if you just try to rush through...

I booted up Portal Knights with very little expectation. I had seen some screenshots that looked neat, and a bit of the trailer that promised some interesting combat, so I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. It was clear that there was definitely something worth checking out here. Unfortunately, it’s with a heavy heart that I must report: Portal Knights isn’t that great.

Last year when Portal Knights launched on PC, I paid little mind to it and wrote it off quickly. Looks like the joke was on me, because if I had actually given it a chance I would've seen that despite the clear cut inspiration Minecraft laid in place, Portal Knights is more of an RPG-lite than just trying to do what Minecraft does.

If you are a fan of Minecraft and are looking for something fresh with an RPG feel, Portal Knights will definitely be a game that you should pick up.  It combines the traditional gathering and creating formula with multiple, randomly-generated islands to explore packed with dungeons, monsters, and towns.  While those who are looking for a creative mode won’t find that here, those who are looking f...

Ultimately, Portal Knights aims to put RPG elements and Zelda-style combat into a Minecraft-like game. Minecraft works because everything is systemic. It’s huge, but everything you can find conforms to particular conditions – diamond only appears below a certain height, sugar cane is found on sand next to water, etc. – so you know where to look. When you remove these systems, you have a Portal Kni...

There’s a tendency among Minecraft-alikes to forget what made Minecraft so popular. Aside from the novel pricing during alpha, LEGO comparisons, and a vague crafting system that really forced the community to come together, it was the freedom of it. You drop into the world, and you go anywhere, do anything, build the world you want to build. Yes, I know that you’re fully aware of what Minecraft is...

Games like this which thrive on exploration and player creativity NEED that heart and soul to make players care about the worlds they discover and the wonders they create. In any other game this would just be a minor strike against it, but in a game all about making the game world your own, the aesthetics are truly the main focus.
