Alone in the Dark has plenty of written text, from books and clues to patient files and transcripts. Every piece of writing includes voiced audio from the character responsible for it, and the voice work never falls flat. You could almost remove the visual side of the game entirely, and you’d be left with a compelling and clear mystery podcast. In a sea of remakes and unearthed old IPs, something rarely stands out as different enough from its original to feel unique while staying similar enough to earn the same title. Alone in the Dark 2024 achieves this balance shockingly well. This is a fresh story, but the respect and adoration of the original are clear at every turn. Because that original happens to be the grandfather of survival horror, Alone in the Dark is a must-play for any fan of the genre.

Every additional hour that I put into this game feels more compelling and immersive than the last. If you think you’ve seen all there is to see, trust me—you haven’t. The features, mechanics, and quirks of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora seem to grow exponentially rather than linearly, and I feel like Jake Sully in the first film scarfing down his meal in his human form so he can return to his Avatar body and get back out to Pandora. This game really is a gift that keeps on giving. In fact, I feel like I could write another 15 paragraphs about all my favorite things in Frontiers of Pandora. Instead, I’ll simply say—play this game.

Payday 3 really is a great time, but only if you have a reliable group of friends to play with. It breaks my heart to say it, because there is SO much that the game does right—but until matchmaking is fixed, I recommend leaving this game in the vault with the other lesser value jewels.
