Ruffy and the Riverside has the pieces in hand, with an appealing artistic style and unique swapping mechanics paving the way for an in-depth puzzle game series. Although I didn’t find its story or enemies particularly interesting, everything else about the title felt refreshing and fun, leaving me feeling hopeful that potential sequels can build upon this blueprint and create something truly captivating.

Dune: Awakening
8.5

Dune: Awakening encapsulates everything I want from a survival MMO game. There’s an interesting storyline, a beautiful world worth exploring, and some grindy aspects to keep me playing for as long as I want. If I’m only limited to an hour, I can quickly gather some resources and progress through a couple of quests before leaving. If I’m available all night, I can get a few friends to tag along to build a massive base in the middle of the desert and laugh when one of them gets eaten by a sandworm. It has some room for improvement with its combat, but with some polish, it can easily stand among the greats within both survival and MMO gaming genres.

Doom: The Dark Ages has wholly succeeded in reminding me just how fun it is to run around, blast enemies, and try out weapons you’d never see in other games. It puts the hell in bullet hell, except you’re the one spewing bullets, and the demons are the ones who’re struggling to survive as you continue your onslaught. Being the most powerful Slayer on the planet has never felt so good.

Split Fiction
9.5

Split Fiction feels like the culmination of what Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios’ team have learned since making Brothers and A Way Out. Both were solid games, and It Takes Two’s success was our first glimpse at what the studio was truly capable of. Split Fiction is everything I could ever ask from a cooperative game and more, easily making it another solid game of the year contender. I wish I could go on about each level and its intricacies since I could easily ramble on numerous incredible moments for a while. This is one of those games that thrives on surprising you at every corner, and hearing my friend’s reactions was just as fulfilling as experiencing my own.

With updates coming out every month and recurring events changing things up, every day feels different on this island. I’m looking forward to seeing how Hello Kitty Island Adventure’s future unfolds.

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire manages to expertly craft an adorably interesting story full of lovable characters, enjoyable narration, and near-perfect parallels between its 2D and 3D worlds. While some parts need just a bit more polish, it exceeded my already high expectations and gave me nearly a dozen hours of laughs, fun, and mental exercise. Plus, well, seeing its cast of cute little characters suddenly turn into buff badasses is a great bonus.
