The year 2023 has been a real monkey’s paw for Lord of the Rings fans. As a huge Middle-Earth fan, I’m always wanting more games utilizing the legendary IP. We’ve gotten some genuinely fantastic games from it, well beyond usual IP cash grabs. Lord of the Rings Online, Battle for Middle-Earth, The Third Age, Shadow of War are all exceptional titles that showed the flexibility of the IP in skilled hands. So 2023 should have been a cause for celebration. Two Middle-Earth games this year,...
The Baldur’s Gate games are my most played across both time and platforms. I played the OGs and Enhanced Editions on PC. Then on iPad when they released there, and they’re on my Android phone now. Finally, there’s the shockingly fantastic console ports I have on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The only other franchise that’s done more to define and shape my taste in gaming is Diablo, and Blizzard has shown laughable care for their legacy compared to Larian’s for somebody else’s. Because ...
While most Assassin’s Creed games weren’t about Assassin’s as it was, the Ancients Trilogy definitely lost the plot. I love all three to be clear, but I can understand why some people are unhappy with the franchise’s new directions. It was after I replayed the Ezio Trilogy on Switch, I myself started to get a bit nostalgic for classic AC. And just in time for the series’ 15 year anniversary, we got Assassin’s Creed Mirage. A budget priced and smaller AC title that pulls the focus ...
When the going gets uncertain, return to Morrowind. That sure seems like Zenimax Online’s strategy, and who can blame them? Nostalgia is today’s market, and it works. The Morrowind Chapter was Zenimax’s pivot from traditional DLC to yearly Chapter expansions, and to say it worked is an understatement. Here we are six years later! And now that Zenimax feels they’ve outgrown their current model, they again turn to the land of mushrooms and casual racism. The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom...
I didn’t hate The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. There’s actually a few things the game does well. I believe that the premise is decent, and with the right execution, it could have been great. However, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is not that game, and fails at being a game on every level. It doesn’t just squander what it did well, but completely and utterly ruins it. I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan, so a game like this should be within my wheelhouse. However, its total failure as a ga...
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is the kind of game that just feels right. The way it controls, the way you move, everything just feels how you know it should. As someone who’s sunk hundreds of hours into classic DOOM titles, I KNOW how a boomer shooter should feel. While I’ve been excited for Boltgun since it’s announcement, not in 40,000 years did I think it would be this good. That it would feel this natural to play. That it would be more then just another ode to classic DOOM, but instead ...
The original Everspace was a quirky and daring game in a genre that has remained stagnant since the 90’s. It was a looter shooter / roguelike space simulator. A hodgepodge of genres, but it worked. I really enjoyed it and played it across multiple platforms. It was my love for the original that made me skeptical of the genre pivot for the sequel, though. Instead of being a run-based roguelike, Everspace 2 is a traditional open-world space sim, just like Freelancer, Rebel Galaxy, Elite Dange...
In the time between the release of Blood Bowl 2 and 3, I have actually played the real tabletop game. I’ve actually got really invested into the extremely expensive hobby of Warhammer wargaming. And while Blood Bowl wasn’t the sole reason, it being my original introduction to the IP is partly to blame. So I definitely made sure to pick up the boxed set and see how it played in real life. My findings were that it plays almost exactly the same, and is still a blast to play. Likewise, Blood ...
Going in, my expectations for Company of Heroes 3 were very negative. I found the previews unengaging and uninspiring. Early impressions I read weren’t particularly positive or hopeful. And hanging above all was the specter of Dawn of War III’s disastrous short-lived life. While I may be a newcomer to Company of Heroes, I’m a huge Dawn of War fan. So the failure of III still feels very fresh, and came to mind whenever I saw anything about this game. So, unfairly I’ll admit, Company o...
“I’ve been dreaming of this day for a long time. I can’t believe I’m here,” is the protagonist’s response to being asked how they’re finding Hogwarts at the start of the game. To me, it sums up my experience with Hogwarts Legacy. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone wasn’t just the first novel I ever read, it was what drove me to learn how to read. I kept up through all the books, saw all the movies, and still regularly visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal...
