A Memoir Blue Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

There’s plenty of space for engaging narratives that don’t rely on traditional gameplay and opportunities to craft smaller tales. A Memoir Blue manages both very well in the process of pulling at the heart strings in just the right way.

A Memoir Blue is an interesting, emotional journey with a great atmosphere to go alongside it. Even though the story demands a little more time, the journey is worth it.

A Memoir Blue is both beautiful and extremely heartfelt. Another indie game from indie publisher Annapurna Interactive, this game feels right at home with its contemporaries in the indie space. Unlike the electrifying gaming experience that is The Artful Escape, also published by Annapurna, A Memoir Blue is a much more somber and reflective game that focuses on lost connections and being stuck in the mistakes of the past.

There’s a lot to praise about A Memoir Blue. It looks and sounds beautiful, and feels almost experimental in its design – it’s always a joy to see small developers trying something new. But it does leave a little to be desired; its short narrative fails to deliver any real punch, and when the credits roll you may be left thinking “…is that it?”. But considering its small asking price, we can’t really complain. If you enjoy narrative-led journeys, particularly those that deal in human emotion, A Memoir Blue is worth picking up.

There are several elements of A Memoir Blue that I feel are worth applauding. The mixture of traditional rendering with hand-drawn animation was implemented beautifully. The soundtrack complements the story's poetic nature tremendously and makes this the perfect kind of experience to help people wind down after a stressful period. The simplicity of its puzzle design may prove too rudimentary for some, but ideal for an audience that may not necessarily play traditional games. They're more for audiences looking for the kind of story experience that can't be told through other mediums.
