Athena Crisis

The real question I set out to answer for myself was a simple one. Is Athena Crisis a true successor to the Advance Wars and Wargroove formula? Or does it feel more like a cheap knockoff, trying to get a quick buck from an unsuspecting gamer? I think seeing all the units that are available to play with speaks enough for itself to show that this isn't the Advance Wars you grew up with. Athena Crisis is a great turn-based strategy, although it does have some performance and control quirks on the Steam Deck.

Worth noting is that this game doesn’t contain the cutaway scenes of Advance Wars and Fire Emblem that show your units battling up close. I do miss these a fair amount as they add exciting impact to skirmishes, but the increased pace as a result of the quicker zoomed-out animations is an okay trade-off.

Athena Crisis is bursting at the seams with new gameplay mechanics and a robust tool set for anyone with a penchant for online play and user-generated content. That being said, who prefer a more polished, curated experience might be left a bit disappointed.
