Avoiding discs and dying a lot never felt so good with Disc Room. With plenty of different abilities and unique obstacles and zones, Disc Room is a tight package that is sure to satisfy.

Disc Room is incredibly difficult. It definitely won’t be for everyone. If you lack patience and find yourself getting frustrated in games where you die frequently, it’s probably not for you. But for those of us that enjoy being furious, who let that fury push us further and faster because we crave a challenge, Disc Room is fantastic. You’ll find yourself going back again and again, getting a little bit further each time until you reach its conclusion. And you won’t be sorry when you do.

Devolver’s 2020 has been quite good so far, much better than most publishers out there. However, I can’t help but feel that a good chunk of their releases were either simple ports of a slightly older games. Or even some other titles which, sadly, just didn’t live up to the hype, like Serious Sam 4. Sure, we’ve had phenomenal titles like Fall Guys and Carrion, but I was wondering if there was something else they would release later on in 2020 to close the year, and also the gaming gene...

Devolver Digital has a cadre of skilled programmers that come up with a plethora of unique titles but perhaps none in their rogues gallery are as aligned to my own interests as the collaborative efforts of Terri Vellmann, Doseone, Kitty Calis and Jan Willem Njiman. When not working on other fantastic projects like Minit and Sludge Life (okay, that one's just weird), the team banded together to create a game about rooms filled with discs. The aptly named Disc Room takes the concept of one single room filled with discs and manages to create an entire space ship filled with body-carving cutlery.

Disc Room is short and sweet, with an interesting aesthetic and some intriguing character building. Unfortunately the latter is hidden in menus, so there’s a chance not all players will get to see what is, in my opinion, one of the best parts of the game.

Most people could leave a similarly styled game feeling like they’ve experienced its entirety before it’s ever finished. But well after I’ve beaten it, Disc Room still holds at least one secret I’m desperately trying to solve. Like the scientist I was in control of, Disc Room pulled me into its mystery and left me wanting more. It’s a great game, but frustrating and unfair sometimes. Regardless, it’ll feel right at home among Devolver Digital’s brightest.

Being a game that will no doubt test your reflexes and tenacity, Disc Room will make the number of deaths you have in a Dark Souls game look miniscule in comparison.

Disc Room might not be a contender for game of the year but it is still enjoyable. The game’s retail price seems a bit high ($14.99) for a short game. Our playthrough of Disc Room‘s normal mode only took two hours without lowering the game’s difficulty. Hard does take a bit longer to complete but only you can justify the purchasing price. The game does have good replay value where you can decide how they want to play each room and change the difficulty. The game is enjoyable but not a must-have unless you like these types of games.
