If you’ve been waiting since DQVIII for a Dragon Quest title to hit your PlayStation, you’ll be glad it’s finally here. It may not do a lot to push the genre forward, but like the game’s design so clearly sets out to do, Dragon Quest XI is an homage to the JRPG and its fans. It’s an immense, addictive, and joyful experience from the first moment on. I cannot recommend it enough.
May it be the likes of Shadow of the Colossus or Metal Gear Solid, if it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.
You don’t come to the Dragon Quest series because you want weighty, intelligent plots. You’ve got Persona for that. You don’t come to Dragon Quest because you want in-depth and rewarding combat mechanics; that’s a space where Final Fantasy plays. What makes Dragon Quest so special is that each game manages to straddle a line between nostalgia for simple, elegant combat mechanics, and the modern game design world, where it can poke fun at itself and laugh along with players. Ultimately, Dragon Quest IV is so steeped in retro gaming culture that it's bound to be polarizing. While it is certainly a well-made game in the traditional Japanese RPG mold, I can't recommend it to everyone. Hopefully, you've learned enough in this review to decide whether it's right for you. If it is, you'll find dozens of hours of entertainment and a continuous drip of nostalgia to make DQIV worthwhile.
