When I spoke with Baiyon last summer at BitSummit about his upcoming game, Dreams of Another, my takeaway was one of fascination and confusion. While he had explained the concept well – and my hands on with the demo gave me a general idea – the execution of it all seemed abstract, at best. Using guns and grenades to create instead of destroy, to interact with objects and glean their stories just for the sake of hearing, and focusing on your own perspective instead of the game’s narrativ...

Dreams of Another is the Waking Life game I never thought I wanted.

Dreams of Another is a wonderful exploration of dreams, memory, materialism, and so much more. While there are points where it feels like some narrative elements outstay their welcome and there are some technical issues that can break the immersion, Q-Games and Baiyon have delivered a charming story and world that I have kept thinking about since the credits rolled.

A release that bets on its own aesthetic and rhythm, without fear of alienating part of the audience.

Dreams of Another is a dreamlike mix between a shooter and an adventure game with excellent art direction and a fascinating story, but a very slow pace.

Dreams of Another is destined to be a polarizing title, but those who gel with its bizarre storytelling and gameplay will find an experience like no other. Q-Games continues to carve its own niche in the gaming landscape, and fans of the studio's previous titles will find much to love here.

Your tolerance for philosophical musings will probably determine how much you enjoy Dreams of Another, but underneath all that is still a fun game.

Dreams of Another is a beautiful experience, albeit one that is sure to be polarizing. If you’re looking for a relaxing, thought-provoking, linear experience that feels like a virtual art exhibit, you’ll likely enjoy this game. For those looking for more of a traditional “game,” however, Dreams of Another can feel slow, repetitive, and is probably something you’d want to skip.

I've also realised that this is probably some kind of art. Some get it, some don't. And even though I consider myself someone who is good at interpreting art and who loves quirky and mysterious games, Dreams of Another goes over my head. This is also reflected in my score, combined with extremely simple gameplay, so it may well be that others think it's absolutely fantastic and has a deep and beautiful narrative, and that's fine too. As with so much other art, it's entirely up to the individual to interpret what they see, and this just wasn't for me.

Dream of Another tells you a story, rather than showing it to you. It can be beautiful, sad, funny, and provoking, but ultimately it was underwhelming. Or maybe I just don’t get it.

In Dreams of Another, you use multiple weapons intended to inflict harm, but in this realm they instead bring order to the world around you.

Dreams of Another is just about the most confounding game I have ever played. There is no creation without destruction, says the game, so you use an assault rifle to shoot the world back together from the clouds of bubbles around you. Meanwhile, you’re following the footsteps of a mole who dies once you get there, picking up random engagement rings or other stuff off the floor to give to a soldier who can’t shoot a gun, who tends to reward you with some grenades. Every detail from every angle in this game is weird. Listen, I’m King Weird – I reviewed and enjoyed Blippo+ in the last few months – but this? This has gone straight through weird and come out the other side – into bad.
