Falling Skies: The Game Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Overall, “The Eye” felt a lot like last week’s premiere. There are a lot of new ideas being bounced around, even more by the end of episode two, but nothing has really settled into a cohesive narrative that’s engaging yet. The concepts are there but the direction isn’t clear as of yet. This season still needs time to simmer so it’s best to give the new showrunner and the new direction the time it needs right now. But you should also come into this with a dose of self-knowledge: do you love the way strategy games tickle your brain? Can you overlook a thorough lack of ambition and graphical polish for the sake of otherwise functional turn-based gameplay? Have you always wanted to try these sorts of experiences, but with a safety net that you just wouldn't find in Fire Emblem or X-COM?

Falling Skies looks terrible, yet still offers a serviceable, if pale, imitation of an XCOM game.

Watch the skies. Don't play them.

There’s no soul to Falling Skies. It’s a generic, cheap turn based tactics game. It lacks any identity of its own, fails to represent its license, and fails to understand what made the game it copied its base mechanics from so great. And as such I can’t really recommend it to anyone.
