Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark has improved a lot of things from the first game and is a 2D Metroidvania to try out for yourself!
Take control of the demon sisters Kirika and Masha as they attempt to revive their Demon Lord Maxim and rebuild their castle in this 2D action Metroidvania adventure! PC version reviewed. Review copy provided by Inti Creates for testing purposes.
This will be a blast for Gal Gun fans and well worth a try for newcomers. There isn’t much beyond the usual Metroidvania trappings, but the build-based combat leaves lots of room for experimentation. Lack of originality aside, a strong imitation can still be an enjoyable experience, and Gal Guardians is never less than a great time. The character-swapping and revive mechanics make solo mode just as engaging as co-op, while the weapon slot system encourages replayability with new builds for Masha and Kirika.
Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark boasts a large world to explore and plenty of fun combat options, but it does have a few minor design decisions that make me scratch my head.
Grim Guardians Servants Of The Dark is a great game and an amazing sequel to the original, with the feel of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Castlevania II Simon's Quest, minus the annoying "Where do I go next?" confusion.
Inti Creates seems to always have their fingers in the most interesting creations. Azure Striker Gunvolt is a fantastic trilogy exploration of the pixel art platformer, Yohane was a very engaging metroidvania all on its own, and Gal*Gun has its own warm, sometimes sticky place in all our hearts (some writers may not condone this statement).
