Gal Metal Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
While there may be plenty of things I'd like to change in Gal Metal, the core of the game is an unmistakably fun time. With so many heavy hitters on the market in 2018, sometimes you need to just sit down, unwind, and out-play alien invaders with electrified versions of classical music.
When talking about this game, Fujii told us, “I don’t expect some player sitting in the dark with pop and chips alone in front of the TV, swinging the Joycons, thinking, ‘Hey, I can’t do this,’ or thinking, ‘Hey, stupid game, it doesn’t detect my beat!’” While this is the exact way I played this game for review (minus the pop and chips), despite the technical issues, I still had a great time with it. Gal Metal is mired in duality. The controls are either basic or brutally complex, depending on your preferences. The music is excellent yet repetitive. The story is charming yet asinine. In the same vein, I both enjoyed and abhorred my time with Gal Metal.
A group of high school students, an alien attack, and Metal. Gal Metal is a unique rhythm based game that mixes metal with a free form playstyle, from DMM Games. Nothing could quite have prepared us for this as we defend earth from certain doom.
Disappointing, that’s the best word to describe Gal Metal. It’s a game with great potential, but it just isn’t focused or accessible enough to capitalise on it. It works best as a music rhythm game, yet on that front it’s pitifully light on content; 13 songs just doesn’t really cut in in the long run. If the time spent creating its passable story and stat-building busywork had been spent further developing the core music rhythm gameplay and adding more songs, Gal Metal could have really been great. As it is though, it’s simply a curio that will bore and frustrate more than it entertains.
Gal Metal is a weird rhythm game that unfortunately doesn’t live up to the hype that its premise promises. It’s worth checking out if you want some metal in your Switch diet, but other than that, you can probably skip it.
