A fun, solid sidescrolling shooter. There's not a lot wrong with it, and I managed to have some good fun.
A beautiful retro game with a great concept. However, there are a variety of hurdles along the way that keep it from being as good as it should have been.
As one of the most defining genres in gaming, you'd think that it's all been done before when it comes to shmups. Gryphon Knight Epic plays as you would expect yet a few twists allow it to stand out. Saddle up your gryphon, let's go for a ride!
If you’re well-versed in the medium, though, ask yourself this: how many shooters have you played with consistent, meditative storytelling throughout? Plot is often cast aside in favour of arcade-style point systems or clumsily executed in that the player has to conduct some research before even playing the game. Similarly, how many shooters have you played that featured no spacecrafts or cutesy anime gals? These are undying tropes that rear their heads in half of the genre, I’d wager. Gryphon Knight Epic is a game that caters well to its niche audience, which is undoubtedly comprised of those benevolent shmup obsessed souls that funded the Kickstarter campaign. Truly, it is a game that is fiendishly challenging for those that side scroll through life, and frustratingly unfair for your average Joe. Much like its setting, Gryphon Knight Epic proves to be somewhat of an anachronism in the world of modern games.
Hit or miss gameplay and questionable mechanics lead to a mediocre experience.
