Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition isn't a vapid rebranding or a blatant cash-in, but a welcome infusion of the original game with new areas, monsters, and bundled-in DLC. I'd definitely recommend it even to those that already experienced it on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, or PC. Guacamelee! was one of last year’s finest games, and now it's one of PlayStation 4's, Xbox One's, Xbox 360's, and Wii U's best, too.
My first experience with Guacameele! was a few years ago at PAX East, where I was able to meet and interview a few of the developers of the game. At that point I really didn’t know much of the game, but after getting some time with their floor-demo, I was instantly in love. The game was released soon after on the PS3, and I enjoyed every minute of it deeply. Now a freshly-updated version has been launched with a bunch of delicious new upgrades to sink your teeth into.
Guacamelee is a fusion of intense platforming and beat-em-up combat, framed in Metroidvania conventions and topped off with a memorable cast, distinct setting, a stellar soundtrack, and zesty humor. These ingredients combine to make for a flavor that’s genuinely fresh and incredibly satisfying. If you’ve had a taste of this delicious entre before and are wondering whether Super Turbo Charged Edition spices things up enough to warrant seconds, the answer is yes. Take a bite of Guacamelee. Chances are you’ll be more than pleased with the sensation that follows.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is simply the best the game has ever been.
Over four years on and Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is still a ‘rasslin riot that’s well worth a play. Despite the passage of time, this colourful indie effort doesn’t show its age and fits the portability of Switch down to the ground. If you’ve played it already on Wii U there’s very little here to convince you to double dip (unless, of course, you’ve only played the 2013 version) - bar the ability to play in handheld mode - but if you’ve somehow missed this lovely luchador adventure, you’ll struggle to find a better platform to play it on.
Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition adds new life to last year's excellent Metroidvania title. Newcomers will enjoy the package, but veterans will struggle to find value.
Every piece of Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition feels essential to the core game, even if I didn’t realize that I wanted each of them. That’s just about the highest praise I could give it; this is the best version of a great game.
