Homura Hime Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

I have such a soft spot for high-octane, anime-style action games, and it’s been a sore spot to see this genre fall by the wayside in recent year. Sure, there are plenty of free to play, but heavily monetised gacha games that serve up the same sort of action-focused combat and flashy visual design, but there’s only so many of these that I can endure before I crave my traditional gaming fix. Homura Hime, despite being a debut release from a small indie studio, scratches that itch and perfectly captures the essence and excitement of the character action genre.

Although lacking in challenge or complex gameplay systems, the title developed by Crimson Dusk still manages to deliver honest fun.

I really wanted to like Homura Hime more than I did, because you can tell there was a lot of heart and thought put into it. Sadly, the fantastic combat and great art are let down by some questionable design choices and a lackluster story. I can only recommend Homura Hime to the diehard character action game fans out there who are looking for a decent game to blast through on a weekend.

Homura Hime attempts to be a sort of NieR Automata for anime lovers. It has partially succeeded, but there are still some caveats in this review.

Homura Hime is a fantastic bullet-hell hack-and-slash game. Its story radiates charm and positivity, despite a dark theme of demonic corruption, and the combat flow is so smooth and addictive that hours can melt away before you even notice. If you have the nerves for its high-speed parry-based combat, this is an absolute must-play. With a Nintendo Switch 2 release already on the horizon, even more players will soon get the chance to experience it, and hopefully other platforms will follow.
