Professional reviews from gaming critics
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an epic way to experience the DBZ story. Don't let that Unsupported rating fool you, this game works amazing on the Steam Deck too!
While Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is undoubtedly a game for Dragon Ball fans, I feel that it’s those like me, who have an interest in it but haven’t found the time to sit down and watch it from beginning to end, that will get the most out of it. Someone like me doesn’t care if it takes liberties with the story, and neither will I be scrutinising it against its source material. With Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot you can simply enjoy an epic story from start to finish, while engaging in action RPG gameplay that’s both rewarding and exciting despite its shortcomings. If you’re a fan of both Dragon Ball Z and...
While the popular Xenoverse series utilized the RPG genre to try something different, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot offers a more traditional retelling of the series in a single player only experience that should at least get the hardcore fans of the series excited to experience this adventure yet again.
Despite not having seen or watched more than a random episode or two over the last ten plus years I remain steadfast in my affection for the Dragon Ball Z series. Of course, while I still love the anime, I’d be the first to admit that I don’t remember many details other than some really big moments and overall storyline. As such, I was more than a little eager to jump back into the anime series that I loved so much as a youngster. And though it might not be a perfect addition to the constantly expanding DBZ game collection, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is certainly a nice little homage to the franch...
An open world RPG that follows the anime closely.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot features flashy gorgeous combat and tells the most detailed version of the original storyline yet but a lifeless open world and useless RPG mechanics hold it back.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a fantastic avenue for new and casual fans alike, providing a deeper level of insight and immersion into a beloved franchise. However, more seasoned veterans of the series may not be as easily impressed. Fluid, fast, and visually stunning combat combined with some intriguing ideas gives Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plenty to root for, but it still doesn't feel as fleshed out and creative as its Xenoverse cousin.
KA-ME-HA-ME-HAAAAA! This game is the most faithful retelling of the anime and a blast to play, but it isn’t without its faults.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot suffers from formulaic gameplay, but its world slightly redeems the experience if you're up for exploring.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's power level is not over 9000, and though it suffers from many issues, it's still an enjoyable – if repetitive and inconsistent – experience.
I wanted to like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot more. I didn't go into the game having super high expectations, but I also expected more than what it had to offer. Making a claim that we can "play the show" means more than complicated progression systems and an open environment. It also means more than hitting the basic plot points. Where the title truly shines in its cinematic qualities. It's gorgeously animated and shows a lot of passion. The flip side of that coin is that gameplay feels passionless. It feels as if developers were trying to improve things that didn't need improvement. All the mechan...
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a game for fans still overflowing with sentiment to Son Goku. And only for them. Everyone else should keep on looking.
