Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot delivers a well-crafted, satisfying action/RPG, provided you’re already invested in the DBZ mythos — and ready to hear the same old story over again. The open-world elements aren’t as well-developed as they could have been, but the combat and gameplay variety help carry the game through some rough patches.

How fitting that I’m reviewing a brand new version of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot exactly three years after I initially reviewed it on the Xbox One. Back then, I had immense hopes for what was supposed to be the ultimate action RPG, for everyone who grew up a fan of the anime (basically half of everyone born between 1991 and 1995). It didn’t exactly disappoint me, as I did have my fair share of fun with it, but it had problems. Some of them were due to its overall design, but a good chunk of t...

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an epic way to experience the DBZ story. Don't let that Unsupported rating fool you, this game works amazing on the Steam Deck too!

Overall, this Switch version stands up right next to the other versions of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. While some things could be better in the game as a whole it doesn’t deter from the overall enjoyment of the story of Dragon Ball. I personally would like to have seen this one start all the way back in Dragon Ball when we first meet everyone, which would truly be a Kakarot story. It is now available on the Switch for 59.99 USD. Have fun with it.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on Switch is a stunningly uncompromised port of last year’s massive RPG. It looks and runs fantastically, while also including all three DLC chapters in a perfectly portable package.

There have been numerous Dragon Ball RPG games in the past, but most were bland, or mediocre at best. Does Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot for the Playstation 4 offer fans something worthwhile? And will it entice non-fans as well?

KA-ME-HA-ME-HAAAAA! This game is the most faithful retelling of the anime and a blast to play, but it isn’t without its faults.

At the end of it all, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is just the same old Dragon Ball Z story with the Dragon Ball Xenoverse cost of paint and a much shinier graphical upgrade. Everyone knows the Dragon Ball Z story by now, and that just makes the game dated. Outside of story moments the game does drag to a halt at times with overly repeated “random” battles, an RPG system that really doesn’t need to be in there, and collecting orbs because reasons. It’s well time for Bandai-Namco and CyberConnect 2 to give the old story a rest and maybe...

Even though DBZ: Kakarot retells the same story the franchise has been telling for decades, it manages to do so in creative new ways for hardcore anime fans.

Unfortunately, most of the fighting isn’t particularly challenging until late-game or post-game, even for someone (like me) who primarily plays RPGs. Unless you’re caught utterly off-guard, you’ll probably be clearing pretty much every fight at A- or S-rank without much difficulty, especially once you get the hang of dodging vertically and managing your Ki meter to maximize your opportunities to unleash special moves. But, hot damn, it sure looks cool, and it's certainly fun enough to keep you charging ahead to see what happens next.

Developed by Cyberconnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was released earlier this month, and retells the entire Dragon Ball Z story.

With so many Dragon Ball Z games out there, Kakarot stands out as a promising large-scale RPG adventure so let's get ready to battle.

Even if I sounded negative in this review, Kakarot definitely held my attention. This is an accurate Dragon Ball game for better or worse. It comes with the visual flair and iconic sound of the show alongside its over-the-top violence. It also comes with its fair share of meandering moments, outdated characters, and pointless minigames. If you wanted to get into DBZ but didn’t know where to start, this is a good introduction. But if you couldn’t care less about Dragon Ball or Eastern open...

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot suffers from formulaic gameplay, but its world slightly redeems the experience if you're up for exploring.

It’s just not particularly interesting to play through. There’s certainly some enjoyment for fans to latch onto, but it’s hard to say if that’s enough when the game feels skin-deep in its appeal.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot frequently powers up to Super Saiyan levels to deliver awe-inspiring battles between godly beings who can topple mountains with atomic blasts and swing fiery fists to knock each other into the stratosphere. However, when the fight is over and one of the warriors is sent to the afterlife, Kakarot struggles to find a pulse within its sprawling open worlds.

Despite not having seen or watched more than a random episode or two over the last ten plus years I remain steadfast in my affection for the Dragon Ball Z series. Of course, while I still love the anime, I’d be the first to admit that I don’t remember many details other than some really big moments and overall storyline. As such, I was more than a little eager to jump back into the anime series that I loved so much as a youngster. And though it might not be a perfect addition to the constantly expanding DBZ game collection...

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a game for fans still overflowing with sentiment to Son Goku. And only for them. Everyone else should keep on looking.

Despite the roughness that comes with some of its systems, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one of the best Dragon Ball Z games we’ve ever seen. CyberConnect 2 has really brought some of the most iconic bits of the Dragon Ball saga to life with its work on the cutscenes, and the game has plenty of offer fans looking to get lost in the world. You just have to be willing to look past some of the more shallow systems and repetitive combat to experience the good.

Dragon Ball Z has a fond place in the hearts of many who were growing up in the late 1990s-early 2000s. Millions of kids tuned into Toonami and got their first dose of anime watching Goku and the gang. I remember the almost unbearable year-long gap between the Frieza Saga and Android Saga when my friends and I combed Geocities fansites on dial-up desperate to find out what happens next.

When Dragon Ball Z Kakarot shines it shines brightly, but it's bogged down by some questionable design decisions along the way.

When Bandai Namco announced that it was going to be making a role-playing game that covers the entirety of Dragon Ball Z, fans seemed somewhat torn. On one hand, developer CyberConnect2 was going to be at the helm -- the studio behind the largely fantastic Naruto Storm titles. On the other, it's hard to get genuinely excited about the retelling of a story that you've heard countless times before -- and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is exactly that.

Is it perfect? No. But Dragon Ball Z has always been a franchise that has thrived despite its shortcomings. And perhaps it is in that way that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot most perfectly captures its source material.

While the popular Xenoverse series utilized the RPG genre to try something different, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot offers a more traditional retelling of the series in a single player only experience that should at least get the hardcore fans of the series excited to experience this adventure yet again.

This likely means that quite a few Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot players, especially those who aren't completionists, will navigate away from these systems to focus on the what the game excels at, its representation of the story and its combat. With that in mind, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an easily lovable game, and fans of the DBZ franchise would do well to check it out to experience the epic saga once again, just this time in all new light.

I wanted to like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot more. I didn't go into the game having super high expectations, but I also expected more than what it had to offer. Making a claim that we can "play the show" means more than complicated progression systems and an open environment. It also means more than hitting the basic plot points. Where the title truly shines in its cinematic qualities. It's gorgeously animated and shows a lot of passion. The flip side of that coin is that gameplay feels passionless. It feels as if developers were trying to improve things that didn't...

A competent adaptation of the original anime but there’s a serious danger of déjà vu even for series fans, and the solid but unremarkable action is unable to overcome it.

Dragon Ball games aren’t rare, and in fact, some are pretty good. Newly-released Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one of the most ambitious titles to adopt the franchise to date, though, as it covers multiple major story arcs from the anime, features hundreds of characters, and spans dozens of hours of playtime. But is this a case of trying to cast too wide of a net?

While Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is undoubtedly a game for Dragon Ball fans, I feel that it’s those like me, who have an interest in it but haven’t found the time to sit down and watch it from beginning to end, that will get the most out of it. Someone like me doesn’t care if it takes liberties with the story, and neither will I be scrutinising it against its source material. With Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot you can simply enjoy an epic story from start to finish, while engaging in action RPG gameplay that’s both rewarding and exciting despite...

I understand the desire to explore the Dragon Ball universe better than anyone, believe me. I, like many Dragon Ball fans, first started watching the show in my early adolescence, and its resurgence in recent years with movies and a brand new animated series and manga adaptation has been heartwarming to see. And even in video games, Dragon Ball FighterZ was an amazing game which not only stayed true to the style and substance of Dragon Ball but offered a truly excellent fighting game, so good that competitors unfamiliar with the franchise couldn't help but be drawn in. It is...

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a fantastic avenue for new and casual fans alike, providing a deeper level of insight and immersion into a beloved franchise. However, more seasoned veterans of the series may not be as easily impressed. Fluid, fast, and visually stunning combat combined with some intriguing ideas gives Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plenty to root for, but it still doesn't feel as fleshed out and creative as its Xenoverse cousin.

Here’s a treat for you, my DBZ: Kakarot Review! I got my review copy of DBZ: Kakarot and had the pleasure of playing it for a couple of hours. I had gotten through part of the first Arc of the story where I beat Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga. While playing, I kept in mind the keypoints I wanted to talk about so that I can present to you my thoughts for the game!

A good amount, actually! Characters like Nam, Launch, Tao, and Eighter appear as characters that you can get sidequests from, and there are also collectible cards that you can find out in the world which unlock a screenshot from the original Dragon Ball anime along with a little bit of text contextualizing it. It’s pretty neat! I always loved stumbling upon one.
