The world is a technicolour dystopia. Slums teeter atop skyscrapers, evil corporations exploit the poor, and good quality pizza is hard to come by. Developed
There’s so much to like about Ninja Pizza Girl. We so rarely get to see glimpses into the team behind a game nowadays, but Ninja Pizza Girl just exudes vibrancy from all its edges that it’s impossible not to be charmed by the wonderful people at Disparity Games. This is a team which can’t get through thirty seconds of commentary without bursting into laughter, and it’s very refreshing to see their upbeat approach to game design. Of course, this is an indie project and the content’s a little on the short side, but when Ninja Pizza Girl hits its stride it really sings.
Overall though, Ninja Pizza Girl is a thoroughly enjoyable game while it lasts, despite a few frustrations. Its biggest achievement is that it manages to capture the essence and momentum of Mirror’s Edge on a 2D plane, but it should also be applauded for its clear anti-bullying message. If you’re looking for a platforming experience with a quick turn of pace then be sure to check Ninja Pizza Girl out. It may be a little rough around the edges, but it’s a wholesome experience that deserves your attention.
Obtaining and maintaining a sense of flow is still satisfying across the few hours the game’s story covers, and there are incentives to keep playing like leaderboards and a dedicated speedrun mode. But mostly Ninja Pizza Girl is an effective exploration of bullying and self-esteem told through gameplay mechanics that are simple enough for a wide audience, but that can offer some challenge to platforming fans as well.
Ninja Pizza Girl attempts to serve up a 2D speed-runner topped with an important social message but the end result feels rather half-baked.
