Paranautical Activity mixes rogue-lite level design, fps gameplay, and a blocky aesthetic to create an interesting experience. The combat can be fun, but encountering certain enemies can quickly turn that around. The weapon choices are cool to experiment with, but the slower characters may turn you away.

Paranautical Activity is a great example of a game that is greater than the sum of its parts. While we were busy bemoaning the long load times, bad soundtrack and minimal features, we found ourselves unable to put the GamePad down. If you like retro-styled graphics and old-school FPS games, you'll find plenty to like here; if neither of those appeal to you then you may be out of luck. If you like the concept and can overlook the technical problems here you may have an unexpectedly good time.

If you’re unnaturally skilled at first-person shooters or have the patience of a saint you might gleam some enjoyment out of Paranautical Activity, but it’s quite unlikely. It’s repetitive, unfairly difficult and nauseatingly ugly to the point that it’s hard to tolerate, never mind enjoy, making it one of the most unsatisfying experiences I’ve had in recent memory. My advice is to give Paranautical Activity a wide berth; there are much better first-person shooters and roguelikes out there that are much more deserving of your money and attention.

Overall, Paranautical Activity is a really, really challenging game to play especially for casual gamers. The visuals and the theme might not appeal to most of the gamers out there but the action it gives out might get some hooked up. The repetitiveness of the levels and the repetitiveness brought by dying and trying might get tiresome real quick and another downside is that there really isn’t much that the game can award the player besides unlocking an even harder level of difficulty plus some small plaques of achievement.
