Protodroid DeLTA is a love letter to a certain kind of game, one I had trouble initially figuring out. It’s essentially a third-person platformer, one that sees you clear levels filled with obstacles and enemies. There’s a great sense of momentum, not unlike classic Sonic games, but without the emphasis on speed.

Though I had mixed feelings about Protodroid DeLTA at first, the game quickly grew on me as all the brilliant little pieces of its design fell together. Lovers of platformers and fans of Mega Man are sure to find something to enjoy in this charming indie title.

Despite a fairly negative-sounding review, Protodroid DeLTA is a fun game. It manages to capture most of the magic of action-platformers of the era, Mega Man X in particular but also the Sonic Adventure games to an extent, with fun, dynamic combat and tons of platforming and a bright, colourful look. Unfortunately, while the gameplay has its moments, it’s also not quite as precise and polished as such a game would require, and with how prevalent and difficult the platforming sequences become, this is certainly a big issue.
