The Reigns series has been around for a while now, and for their fifth entry, Nerial has chosen to base their latest adventure on the Chinese epic, “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. Reigns: Three Kingdoms, is ultimately, more Reigns, but it has a few tricks up its sleeves to push the series further.
That may sound dismissive – it kind of is dismissive – but it’s not altogether a bad thing. It doesn’t really hit me for a lot of my interests, and I definitely found myself feeling a bit like “well, why fire it up again” after my play sessions, but it’s also a nice lightweight game for playing when you want some lightweight strategy fun. And it’s set during an interesting stretch of history, to boot. If that’s your cup of tea, it’s well worth it.
Life in the Han dynasty was apparently pretty brutal. At the very least, death was around every corner for its rulers. Such is the lesson imparted by Reigns: Three Kingdoms. But don’t worry! As far as brutal murders go, most of yours will be quick and painless. Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. Have you ever wanted to live like an ancient Chinese head of state? Well, now’s your chance! But again, expect your reign to be pretty short, in general.
