Sea of Solitude: Director's Cut portrays mental health struggles perfectly, and has an uplifting, albeit tumultuous journey in store for you.
Despite the lack of subtlety, Sea of Solitude is largely successful in bringing its positive affirmative message to a colorful world. The events that play out are often powerfully voice acted and complemented with incredible art. It wears its influences on its sleeve and is profoundly direct with its ,but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Even though the gameplay is flawed with clumsy and inaccurate platforming, it’s not enough to capsize a strong overall presentation.
Sea of Solitude tackles a delicate subject in mental health, but does so with grace and understanding. While it doesn’t sugarcoat trauma, Sea of Solitude also takes possible trigger moments into consideration. Developer Jo-Mei accurately shows the struggle in wanting to confront your past, no matter how destructive and painful it may be. Kay’s journey is as much of an introspective look inside herself as it is to everyone else. Regardless of the life you live, there’s a good chance these emotions affected you or someone you know. I remember vaguely hearing about Sea of Solitude when it was first released back in 2019. The narrative-based game from Jo-Mei Games was said to explore mental health in a fascinating way, but due to my own schedule during its original release, I never managed to try it out. Earlier this year the
