Professional reviews from gaming critics
Someday You'll Return is an immensely rewarding game with excellent visuals, world design, and storytelling. Poor signposting and trial-and-error can lead to frustration, but the experience is very much worth it regardless.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Someday You’ll Return from CBE Software for quite a while now. I discovered it a while back when browsing through Steam looking for my next potential game to satisfy my horror craving. I kept my eye on it and was saddened when the release date was pushed back due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. Well the day finally arrived and I was able to get my hands on it. It was well worth the wait.
Someday You'll Return is a psychological horror game about a father searching for his daughter in the woods. Various mechanics such as manual climbing, puzzle solving, crafting, and herbalism all keep gameplay fresh and engaging. Herbalism isn't used as much as it could've been, which is a shame since it's pretty neat. Through it all, you'll start to question your own sanity.
When Someday You’ll Return is at its best, it is one of the finest immersive horror games I’ve played. Its take on psychological horror and ability to create a sense of dread is second to none, but that comes with some caveats. It can drag in parts, has some frustrating stealth sections and some puzzles that are needlessly obscure, but if you're prepared to make it through the less successful moments, there is a lot to love here.
Someday You'll Return has some intersting ideas that mash together in a bit of an odd way, and can be worth experincing if you don't mind a crummy story, bad horror stealth, and occasionally iffy puzzles.
Did I enjoy Someday You’ll Return and is it worth the money? Yes, understatement of the year. It has a few problems, but that doesn’t stop it from being a pretty great and enjoyable game. I actually streamed Someday You’ll Return for some friends as I played it, and had them hooked from the first jump scare. It’s not quite as scary as it is thrilling, though it does have some terrifying moments here and there that get your adrenaline flowing. After you see the monster for the first...
It definitely has its moments, but Someday You’ll Return hides its charms behind hours of mindless puzzles and unnecessary filler.
I was recently going back through a re-watch of the Sopranos and I came across an episode that made me think a lot about this game. In the episode Christopher
Someday You’ll Return’s central mystery is an intriguing one so it’s a shame that the plodding stealth sections, superficial crafting elements, and incessant backtracking muddy its allure. Someday You’ll Return is just barely worth the effort the first time, let alone a game you might actually consider coming back to.
It’s getting dark. You’re stumbling through the twilit woods, only vaguely conscious of your destination. At the edges of your mind you hear whisperings – fragments in an unknowable language – as a vile, mossy sludge drips across your vision. You wash your hands in a stream and exclaim at the refreshing feeling. Wander through a pretty, fetid and frustrating mindscape in Czech developer CBE Software’s spooky new release, Someday You’ll Return.
Easily one of the most intricate indie games I’ve played.
