A fine action platformer all around, with only a few small hiccups. This shoot-’em-up embraces backtracking and light puzzle elements, while weaving in plenty of nostalgic moments from the classic anime. It should be a delightful experience for both longtime fans and action-platformer enthusiasts alike.
Space Adventure Cobra — The Awakening is a fun action platforming game that does a great job of recreating the original series that everyone can enjoy.
In a world where seemingly the vast majority of classic anime adaptations boil down to arena brawler after arena brawler, it has been wonderful to see Cobra get a more in-depth approach. What results is an enjoyable game that conveys the anime’s story not only in its cutscenes but throughout its level design as well. It is clearly a game made by a team with legitimate admiration for their source material. It has some small issues with enemy balance and a few minor presentational blunders, but it's hard to ignore the charm and passion that exudes from Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening.
Laser arm? Check. Spaceship? Check. Trouble? Always. Cobra is back and the galaxy isn’t ready. Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening is a 2D action platformer
Space Adventure Cobra - The Awakening is a stylish and enjoyable revival of the iconic action hero. Blending some anime nostalgia with modern platforming, it's a solid outing and even better tribute to Buichi Terasawa.
I really enjoyed Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening. But a lot of that love has to do with the excellent presentation. The game struggles with some odd controls, and archaic level design. It’s not built as tightly as a lot of modern platformers. But it has lots of content, and a variety of gameplay in its main story. The game’s real strength is its anime presentation. Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening perfectly captures the visual and auditory aesthetic of its Space Cobra source material. If you’re a fan of Space Adventure Cobra, or looking for more 2D action platform games, then Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening is worth your time. Maybe just wait until it’s on sale.
Cowboy Bebop doesn’t mean a damn thing in Japan. When Millennial weebs finish rage smashing their empty Sobe bottles, we can continue. This anime, which I know was a cornerstone for Adult Swim viewers of the late 90s, is heralded in the U.S. as one of the best of all time. And, as a longtime Japanese resident, I can tell you I’ve never seen hide nor hair of it in its county of origin. Sometimes, creations just do better in outside markets. Like The Ventures: you might only know the name i...
I love that gamers in 2025 get an adaptation of a relatively obscure 1982 anime. I love that it actually incorporates cutscenes from that anime. I don't love the game itself, but I like quite a bit of it, so let's tune in to Space Adventure Cobra - Awakening.Read More
Originally inspired by Buichi Terasawa’s intergalactic action manga from the late 1970s, Space Cobra (or Space Adventure Cobra) was a 1982 anime series involving an adventurer named Cobra who found himself at the centre of all kinds of intergalactic battles.
While fans of the anime will no doubt get the most out of Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening, its engaging mix of run 'n' gun gameplay with platforming and Metroidvania elements make it suitable for all. The unique Psychogun with its guidable bullets is the standout feature here. It's just a shame that the overall experience is brought down a little by some minor issues that can cause frustration.
If you’ve never even heard of the 1970s manga ‘Cobra’ and the anime movie – ‘Space Adventure Cobra’ – and TV show that spawned from it, then don’t worry; me either. What I came to learn is that Cobra is absolutely brilliant, it’s self-indulgent, silly sci-fi at its finest. An over-the-top tale in which a Han Solo-like hero called Cobra, an intergalactic adventurer no less, travels the galaxy battling the villainous Pirate Guide – whose numbers include the superbly named Crystal Bowie. Well, Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening is the video game of that story, a 2D side-scrolling Metroid-lite shoot ‘em up that does a lot of things well, and just as many things badly.
Space Adventure Cobra - The Awakening is a 2D action platformer and an adaptation of the classic series Cobra. The game excels at adapting the anime, all the cutscenes are beautiful and the music is superb too. Sadly that doesn't transfer over to the gameplay and you end up with a basic platformer. It's still an okay time, but one that made me want to check out the source material over going back to the game.
The fact that Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening exists is very cool, but it's not as much fun as the anime that inspired it.
Overlong levels, confusing structure and unsatisfying basics leave only the charisma of the source material to carry an otherwise average attempt at reviving a classic.
For longtime fans of the anime, the authenticity of the cutscenes, the retro soundtrack, and the larger-than-life characters will feel like a loving throwback. For newcomers, it’s a competent if occasionally frustrating action romp. Not a hidden gem, but a solid revival—proof that even forty years later, Cobra still knows how to make an entrance.
