What Squad 51 VS The Flying Saucers lacks in technical perfection is more than made up for by its overall presentation and player friendly take on the 2D shmup genre. I was not just having fun; I was invested in the cheesy over the top story. After every level I eagerly loaded up the next one excited to see more of this wonderfully realized world. Yes, the seams are sometimes more visible than one would hope, and loading times to restart a level are legitimately frustrating, but the net result is easily one of my personal favorite shumps of all time.
Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers occasionally overcommits to its retro vibe with punishing and unfair difficulty, but its action is tight and it's charming enough to overlook the flaws.
If the idea of a shoot 'em up with a retro '50s aesthetic appeals to you then I have good news because here's one nifty shooter.
The idea of mixing bullet hell shooters and aesthetics from the 40s and 50s isn’t entirely unheard of (Capcom has made quite a buck with its 1942 series, after all), but I can’t say I have ever played a bullet hell shooter meant to look and feel like a B-movie from the same era. Hell, I don’t think I have ever played a video game in general that featured said visual style.
